YOUR CONVERSATIONS, YOUR ACCOUNT

Privacy & data

Independent AI is an independently operated assistant. It uses OpenAI’s API to generate answers and its own username-and-password accounts to keep each account’s conversation history separate.

What this site stores

When you sign in, the site stores your username, a salted password hash, a hashed recovery-code verifier, hashed session tokens, a unique account identifier, your conversations, custom instructions, and uploaded files in its hosted database and file storage. Registration does not collect your real name or email address. Passwords are never stored as readable text. Other visitors cannot access your chats through the app.

What goes to the model provider

When you send a message, your prompt, a limited amount of recent conversation history, your custom instructions, and relevant attachments are sent to OpenAI. Only the three most recent attachments in the current context are included. Text attachments are limited to the first 18,000 characters. Search is enabled by default and can be turned off. Turning on Search allows the model to search the web; search queries may reflect information in your prompt.

The app requests that Responses API results are not stored as retrievable responses at OpenAI. OpenAI may still retain data under its API data policies. Review OpenAI’s API data controls for details.

Public research sources

The source library caches brief excerpts, titles, dates, and links from official public Google, Microsoft, Amazon/AWS, Meta, and Apple feeds. Relevant excerpts can be included in research requests. Fetching a publisher feed does not send your account details or conversations to that publisher. Direct connections to Gemini, Copilot, Alexa, Siri, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok accounts are not configured by collecting public articles.

Managing your account

You can change your password, replace your single-use recovery code, and sign out other devices from Account & security. Save the recovery code privately: this site does not collect an email address for password recovery. Sessions expire after seven days. Signing out invalidates the server-side session.

Managing your chat data

You can export a conversation as a Markdown file, or export all your conversations and custom instructions as JSON from Preferences. Account exports include attachment details; download the original files separately from your chats. You can archive a conversation or restore it later. Archiving keeps the conversation in your account. Use Delete in the conversation menu to permanently remove a chat. In Preferences, you can remove all your conversations, attachments, and custom instructions. This keeps your username, password verifier, and account security records so you can continue to sign in.

Minimal account identifiers and daily request counters remain temporarily after deletion to enforce usage limits. Voice dictation, when available, uses your browser’s speech service, which may process audio outside this site. Read-aloud uses your device or browser’s speech voices.

Usage and limits

The site operator pays for model API usage. Requests are limited per account and across the site each day. Files are limited to 2 MB each, three per message, and a total of 25 files or 20 MB per account. Answers may be incomplete or incorrect; check information before relying on it.
